Make the most of Easter period

It is fair to say this Easter is going to be like no other, with many of us remaining indoors for the foreseeable with our families.  Whilst this can be challenging at times, it is also a great opportunity to make small changes to your home and a way for the family to come together in the process.  No matter what size your home, there are lots of ways to entertain the family during Easter lockdown.

Here are our Top 10 home improvement tips that you can do this Easter:

Have a Spring clean

Now that Spring has officially sprung, there is no better time to tackle some of those jobs you may have been putting off around the house, be it in one room or the whole property. For example, now is a good time to clean out the fridge/freezer, or perhaps declutter your wardrobes or the children’s toys and decide what items you want to keep or could you donate them to a charity in need? You’ll be amazed at how much better things look after they have been tidied, and a great upside is more space which makes for a calmer home environment.

Upcycle

Would you love to buy some new furniture as your current pieces seem a little tired and old? Rather than throw them out, use this time as a chance to upcycle! Sometimes all you need is a fresh coat of paint and maybe change the door knobs to make a piece of furniture come alive and feel like a brand new piece. A great activity to do with children is stencilling or attaching decal stickers to their own furniture pieces as a way to personalise and get them involved. Alternatively on a simple level, an old scarf you no longer wear can make a wonderful runner for the dining table or be draped over a sofa or used as a bedspread to give it a whole new lease of life.

Create an Easter egg hunt with a difference

With families in lockdown this Easter why not create an indoor egg hunt with either written clues or a map based on some of your furniture changes or room decorations! This is a great way to extend the hunt and a way for children to develop orienteering skills. A variation on the typical egg hunt is especially useful if you need to do the hunt in a small indoor space.

Grow a kitchen herb garden

There is no better time to do some planting with your family and if you do not have a garden you can still get involved as many plants and herbs are able to grow happily inside – young children can be involved in the planting and maybe even given a pot to look after to inspire them.

Add a splash of colour

We all know the amazing transformations a simple lick of paint can do to refresh a room and this is a great time to experiment.  Perhaps your child has outgrown their bedroom décor? Why not use Easter as a perfect opportunity for redecoration and create a mood board together using Pinterest or magazines in the home to inspire.  It is important that they are involved in selecting colours and design and you can even get them involved with the painting if they are old enough.

Rearrange a room

Not all changes involve a trip to the shops or power tools, sometimes simply moving around the furniture in a room can make a huge difference to how you interact in your home. Often furniture from a different room can work wonders in a new space, such as a chair from the living room moving to a bedroom or perhaps a picture from the kitchen moving to the hallway – little changes can make a big difference!

Baking

Easter is a time of sweet treats, and a number of top chefs and bakers are offering recipes online that everyone can do at home. Even with a few simple ingredients there are endless creative ways you can bake some tasty Easter treats. This is a perfect activity for young children to get involved in mixing, or decorating to show off their skills.

Decorate your windows

With some simple paper, craft supplies and glue ask young children to make pretty decorations and pictures to raise the spirits of neighbours and also unleash their creativity. The current trend for rainbows is a lovely idea for NHS workers as a way to show our appreciation.

Rock painting

If your craft supplies are running a little low, a more simple craft activity you can do is some Easter rock painting. All you’ll need is some palm-sized pebbles, paint, and a little creativity. These can make an alternative to eggs as a centre piece to the Easter table or can be displayed in rainbow hues on the window sills alongside the rainbow pictures!

Green fingers

If you happen to have a garden or a balcony space this is a great time to start getting it summer ready. This can include cleaning outdoor furniture as well as trying something new such as painting furniture or fences in a bright colour to bring freshness to the space, or perhaps putting out some pot plants and draping some fairy lights to create a dreamy urban oasis atmosphere in the evenings.
