Public art initiative launch at City North development

Telford Homes, in partnership with the Business Design Centre Group, will shortly announce the final design chosen from the ‘Art For City North’ initiative at its City North development in Finsbury Park, North London, W1B.

The social engagement project saw just four, out of an original 50 artists, shortlisted and their designs presented to a carefully chosen selection committee. Currently, the images of the shortlisted artists are displayed on the development hoardings in Wells Terrace, with more information available from the John Jones Art Building. The public are offered the unique opportunity to share their thoughts on the artist’s proposals and have until the last weekend of October to put forward their views before the final art piece is chosen, by filling out an open questionnaire online.

The project aims to celebrate the diversity of Finsbury Park and give its rich identity a visual representation that can be enjoyed by both locals and visitors, as well as enhance the aesthetic landscape of the area. The concept, planning, level of community engagement and execution of each of the four proposals are part of the selection criteria the committee will be taking into consideration when choosing the final design.

Each of the four proposed designs are strikingly different, including glass sculptures, ceramic tiles, bronze paving and community portraits in steel plates. Telford Home’s landmark City North development of 307 new homes is centred around the enrichment of the local area and developing a sense of pride and community.

As well as a variety of one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments, duplexes and penthouses, the development is aiming to enhance the area as a leisure destination by providing a number of new commercial units for leisure occupiers, as well as a new fitness centre, cinema, supermarket and central piazza where the public art piece will be displayed.

Ben Eastop, of Art Projects comments: “The artist’s commission will help to provide City North a unique identity, enhancing the quality of the public realm and provide local people and those travelling through with a deeper understanding of the area, and a stronger identity for Finsbury Park”

David Campbell, Group Sales and Marketing Director at Telford Homes, comments: ‘We have designed City North to celebrate and enhance the unique identity of the already thriving Finsbury Park community. Using art as a visual representation of this partnership, we hope both residents and visitors will enjoy being involved in the selection process and the chosen piece for years to come.”
