ICONA DEVELOPMENT WIN AWARD

Telford Homes’ Icona development in Stratford, East London won the Best Housing Project-Large Developer/Development at the 2009 LABC National Building Excellence Awards on Tuesday, 20th October at the Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square in London.

With the 2012 Olympics just a stone’s throw away, Icona provides another sizeable stepping stone in the current regeneration of the Stratford area. The judges of the LABC Awards chose the project as the winner because of its exciting design and contribution to a sustainable community.

Developer and contractor Telford Homes, architect Stock Woolstencroft and the London Borough of Newham worked together to produce this £51million development comprising of a mix of 245 high-quality residential units and landscaped public areas. The construction team implemented modern methods of construction, which at the start of the design process some five years ago were common in commercial development but innovative in residential use. External panels and balconies that were pre-fabricated in Holland meant the 18- storey tower could be constructed without traditional scaffolding.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards differ from others in the industry. They acknowledge the often unseen contribution that building control makes towards the built environment. By ensuring that projects comply with the Building Regulations, local authority building control provides safe, sustainable and accessible buildings across England and Wales. Local authority building control helps developers, designers and builders make decisions during the design and development process, working cooperatively with clients to avoid disruptive corrections during the construction phase.
